Oak Technology Launches the OTI-4100 - a Programmable System-On-a-Chip Solution for Entry-Level Imaging and Printing Appliances

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Oak Technology, Inc., a leading provider of embedded solutions for the digital imaging and digital home entertainment markets, today announced the availability of its OTI-4100, a highly integrated, fully programmable, system-on-a-chip (SOC) solution based on Oak's Quatro(TM) imaging DSP platform. The OTI-4100 complements its predecessor, Oak's OTI-4110, by providing a set of features and performance optimized for entry-level print appliances. This single-chip solution integrates the processing capabilities and connectivity modules that enable quick time-to-market implementation in the rapidly growing market for stand-alone printers. This market includes color inkjet MFPs, monochrome and color laser MFPs and direct-connect photo printers with USB or memory card interfaces as well as any printer requiring one or more PC-independent functions.

The OTI-4100 provides an unparalleled level of price/performance and is optimized to meet the needs of entry-level market segments within the personal imaging and printing appliance markets. The rapid growth of these categories has been driven by factors including lower prices and increased bundling, innovative features and the proliferation of image-rich content from digital cameras, scanned documents and photos, and the Web. The OTI-4100 has been specifically designed to address the aggressive cost requirements of entry- level segments and its full programmability allows original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring differentiated products to market quickly, cost- effectively and with more value-added features.

The OTI-4100 incorporates two proven processors, the ARM7TDMI(R) RISC CPU core and Quatro SIMD DSP core. This pairing provides OEMs with a compelling combination of high performance and easy-to-use programmability. The ARM(R) CPU core delivers high-performance system and control processing with industry leading code density and an extremely high quality development environment. "Oak is a leader in providing integrated solutions giving fast time-to-market and high-performance processing for imaging OEMs," said John Rayfield, vice president, U.S. Marketing, ARM. "This key partnership positions ARM as the architecture of choice for low-cost, intelligent imaging systems such as ink and laser-based MFPs."

"Oak's OTI-4100, pairing the cost-effective ARM7 with Oak's Quatro imaging DSP, further strengthens Oak's Quatro SOC product line, meeting the unique demands of the expanded PC independent personal appliance market," said Keith Kmetz, program director, hardcopy peripherals solutions and services at IDC, a market research firm. "This strongly positions Oak Technology's product line-up in the low-end segment* which is projected to grow 35% worldwide from 2001 to 2006."

"The Quatro platform is the foundation of a family of innovative SOCs targeting a range of emerging products in the imaging and printing markets," said Neil Epstein, director of product marketing, Oak Technology Imaging Group. "The OTI-4100 is our latest product that allows our OEM customers to develop products with both outstanding image quality and greatly differentiated features. With the addition of the OTI-4100 to Oak's product family, we provide our customers with a platform that covers the needs of their entire inkjet and personal laser product lines."
